Thieving Discovery Bank Punishing Customers with Poor Process

Impossible to get insight from Discovery Bank into account closure and refund progress. Clearly there is an issue, but gaps in internal systems and siloed departments mean there is no way for me to understand what is happening or why it is stalled. Recently triggered a request to close my credit card account with Discovery Bank which also involves needing a refund to be issued for the positive balance. I have comp**** with every ask from the collections team and been met with inefficiency and complete disregard at every step of the way. I was asked twice to provide documentation that I had already provided which initially stalled the process, and have had my account locked and unlocked 3 times since then. Nearly a month later and my account is now neither closed nor accessible; effectively blocking access to my legitimate funds. I have followed the directions on logging complaints – including referencing the case number ***. The complaints department has not so much as acknowledged my communications. I even went so far as to peruse the entirety of the terms and conditions for my account which clearly outlines both the process they should be following for closure and the process for complaints; neither process is being adhered to by the bank themselves. Every time I reach out to the collections team they tell me "the request has been sent to the product operations team and is in progress". When I ask for clarity on what that means and whether they can provide feedback from the operations team, they tell me that they will need to escalate. I ask for escalation and when I call back, no one has record of the escalation or any new / meaningful feedback for me. At this point, I am compiling my evidence to lay a formal complaint with the NFOS. Would be interested to know whether anyone else has had any real success with a similar case. Deeply frustrated and now very likely to move my transactional account away from the bank as well.

Shocking and utterly pathetic service from Discovery Vitality and Discovery Bank!

Dear Discovery Management, I am writing to express my extreme disappointment and frustration with the service I have received from both Discovery Vitality and Discovery Bank. I joined Vitality and opened a Discovery Bank account just over a week ago. I was effectively forced into opening a bank account to gain access to the fitness facility and enjoy the benefit of two free workouts. The initial service I received was excellent, almost over the top, and created the expectation that I would be receiving the exceptional customer experience Discovery prides itself on. Unfortunately, that experience has been short-lived. I am now unable to access or book the fitness facility, despite being eligible for the two complimentary workouts. Whenever I attempt to make a booking, I receive the following error message: "Something went wrong! There was an error in processing this request." What has made this experience particularly unacceptable is the complete lack of assistance from both departments. Vitality blames Discovery Bank, while Discovery Bank points the finger back at Vitality. Nobody seems able to explain the problem, identify the cause of the error, or provide a solution. I have spent an unreasonable amount of my own time contacting various departments, making calls, and trying to resolve an issue that should never have become my responsibility to manage. I have also been promised callbacks that have never materialised. I am left chasing people for answers, wasting my airtime, and getting absolutely nowhere. This is not the level of service I expected from Discovery. It is incredibly frustrating to be welcomed with such enthusiasm when signing up, only to be met with indifference, a lack of accountability, and an apparent inability to resolve a straightforward technical issue once you have become a customer. I should not have to run between two departments, repeatedly explain my situation, and try to establish which team is responsible for fixing the problem. I expect Discovery Vitality and Discovery Bank to communicate with one another, take ownership of the issue, and provide a clear resolution rather than passing the responsibility back and forth. At this point, I am seriously questioning whether joining Vitality and opening a Discovery Bank account was the right decision. What was presented as a wonderful customer experience has instead become an exhausting and deeply disappointing exercise. I am genuinely considering cancelling my membership and reconsidering my relationship with Discovery altogether. I expect this complaint to be escalated to the relevant management team and for someone to take ownership of the matter. I would appreciate: - A clear explanation as to why I am unable to book the fitness facility. - Confirmation of which department is responsible for resolving the issue. - Assistance in activating my access and enabling me to book my two complimentary workouts. - A personal response from someone who can resolve the matter, rather than another referral to a different department. I would also appreciate a response as soon as possible, as I have already spent more than enough time trying to resolve this issue myself. Please do not respond with another generic apology or refer me back to the same departments. I am looking for accountability, communication, and a practical solution. I trust that Discovery will take this complaint seriously and demonstrate that the customer experience extends beyond the initial sign-up process. Kind regards, A deeply disappointed customer Vitality ***

Reckless spending and inflated spending limits

To the Discovery Executive Management Bank Team: I am writing to formally express my dissatisfaction with the recently inflated minimum spend requirements for airport lounge access on the Discovery Black card. The current threshold of R23,600 per month is completely disconnected from the actual disposable income of your target demographic. A Black cardholder earns a minimum gross income of R70,833, which translates to roughly R40,000 net after tax, medical aid, and pension. Once essential debit orders for a vehicle (R10,000) and accommodation (R10,000) are accounted for, the remaining disposable income is approximately R20,000. Requiring a monthly spend of R23,600 to unlock lounge access is mathematically impossible without compromising a client's ability to save, invest, or cover basic living expenses. Additionally, directing clients to the Visa Airport Companion's 6 free visits is not a valid solution. This is a baseline Visa network benefit, not a Discovery-specific perk. Competitors like ABSA and FNB offer 10 free visits through the exact same Visa programme. When Discovery launched in 2019 with 180,000 clients, you offered a clear, accessible alternative to traditional banks. Now, with nearly 2 million clients, you are implementing the same restrictive practices you originally disrupted. Referring to lounge access as a mere "perk" minimizes the core value proposition of a premium banking product. I request that you review these inflated requirements. Furthermore, please do not respond to this complaint by offering to downgrade me to a lower-tier package. I expect the value of my current product to be maintained. Regards:

Unnecessary interest charged on my Discovery Bank Credit Card!

I am constantly charged interest on my credit card within the 55 day interest free period which is much advertised by most banks including Discovery Bank. I have asked for a response as I am someone who doesn't want to pay interest on my card and therefore pay the full balance just before the 55 days interest free period has elapsed, in order to dodge being charged interest. Despite this, Discovery Bank charges me interest before 55 days (as early as day 30) and cannot and doesn't want to give me a reason why they do so. I am entitled to a full 55 day interest free period, in line with what they advertise to their customers when offering them a credit card.

Poor and pathetic

Made a realtime payment this morning just after 6h00, remained on pending, followed up and was advised it was due to technical issues but will be paid after 30min. Two hours later I had to follow up again and was passed from one person to another. There after I followed up every 2 hours and still they played pass. From banksr to ***** department to payments and back to the banker. After alot of complaints one person actually attempted to help around 16h00. And was told IT is going to do a bulk deletion of payshap payments around 17h00 and the money would reflect in my account again. And still nothing...

Shocking service

Your service is absolutely appalling. I called the week before last and was told I will get an answer within 4 days. So here I am almost 2 weeks later and STILL NOTHING! I sent a message on Facebook, they asked my *** and then just stopped responding. I would like to know how it's possible that my *** account is earning LESS interest every month when there is in fact more money than the previous month since nothing was withdrawn. This is the interest I earned and the rates for each month: July - 7.2% = R443.71 August - 7.2% = R430.88 September - 7.2%-7.45% = R421.96 How is it possible for interest to be LESS WHEN THERE IS MORE MONEY IN THE ACCOUNT???

Disgusting client service and not sticking to promises

Absolutely disgusting service from Discovery. They don't give a **** about their clients. I requested an account closure after paying a settlement amount in June 2026. Discovery confirmed they received the request and it will take 8 business days. It's been 4 months and fees have accumulated and now they telling me I need to wait another 8 business days. At this point I do not trust Discovery bank to adhere to my request. I want my account closed today and a closure letter provided today. I am appalled by this banks level of unprofessionalism and making me hold for extended times just to get told the same ****. I will boycott this bank with everything I have.
