We expected more from the school, particularly given the level of parent involvement required. Much of the end-of-term feedback appears generic and AI-generated, which limits its value in providing meaningful insight into a learner's progress. Parents and learners are largely responsible for marking and checking homework, and because teachers do not consistently review completed work, they may not be aware when a learner is falling behind. Similarly, many exams are initially marked by AI, with parents and learners expected to compare results against the memorandum and formally dispute any incorrectly marked answers. This places a significant administrative burden on families. We also have concerns regarding the level of teacher-led engagement. In some classes, learners are placed in breakout rooms and instructed to work through content independently, even when the lesson is not intended to be self-study. Frequent teacher changes, particularly in subjects such as Mathematics, further disrupt continuity and create additional challenges for learners. The parent portal is not particularly user-friendly and can be time-consuming to navigate. In addition, there are occasions where live classes are double-booked, resulting in learners missing lessons that parents have paid for. The timetable structure could also be improved. Some days have very few lessons, while others have multiple classes scheduled back-to-back with little opportunity for breaks. Furthermore, when public holidays fall on a Tuesday or Thursday, lessons are often scheduled immediately before or after the weekend, which makes planning family long weekends difficult. While we understand that school fees are spread across 12 months, it is frustrating to continue paying full fees during December when learners are not attending classes. We recognize that Teneo can work exceptionally well for highly self-disciplined learners. However, for many families where both parents work full-time and cannot effectively homeschool or supervise schoolwork throughout the day, the administrative demands can become overwhelming. Given the limited availability of government schools and the high cost of many private schools, families often have few alternatives, making these concerns particularly important to address. Overall, we believe there is significant room for improvement in learner support, teacher oversight, communication, and the overall parent experience

A wonderful move for our daughter

Our daughter Alyssa joined Teneo in January for Grade 6, moving from a traditional school environment to online schooling. Naturally, the transition was daunting at first, but the Teneo platform is incredibly user-friendly, and the support from her teachers has been exceptional. They genuinely go out of their way to help and still create a wonderful personal connection with the children. We especially love the social side of Teneo, including the fun Filter Fridays and social clubs. Alyssa has even discovered a love for crocheting! Most importantly, her marks have improved significantly. She has more time to focus properly on her schoolwork, completes most of her work during the school day, and has regained precious time to simply be a child. As a mom with a toddler at home, Teneo has also made homeschooling manageable rather than overwhelming. Alyssa loves her teachers, has made friends, is thriving academically, and is genuinely happy. We absolutely love Teneo and would wholeheartedly recommend it to families considering the move from traditional schooling to online or homeschooling.

Excellent online teaching.

Our experience with Teneo Online School has been such a positive one, especially watching Jayden grow throughout his Grade 7 year. When we first started with online schooling, I wasn’t sure how well Jayden would adjust, but Teneo has provided him with the structure, support and guidance he needs to thrive. His teachers have been wonderful—supportive, approachable and genuinely invested in his education. I’ve especially loved seeing Jayden become more independent and responsible with his schoolwork. He has grown in confidence and has adapted so well to the online learning environment. As a parent, knowing that Jayden is happy, supported and receiving a quality education gives me great peace of mind. Teneo has been a wonderful choice for our family, and I would happily recommend it to other parents considering online schooling for their children. Thank you, Teneo, for all the support you have given Jayden and for helping make his Grade 7 journey such a positive one. ❤️

Excellent service!

Nearly 20 years ago, we felt called to begin our homeschooling journey with our oldest son. We stepped into the unknown, trusting God to guide us as we learned along the way. At the time, homeschooling was very different from what it is today. Parents carried most of the responsibility, from selecting a curriculum to teaching, assessing work, and overcoming challenges. It was rewarding, but it required a significant commitment of time, energy, and perseverance. Our two eldest children successfully completed their homeschooling journey and later graduated from the University of the Free State (Kovsies), giving us firsthand experience of both the challenges and benefits of homeschooling. When our youngest son reached school age, we began the journey again. This time, however, the experience has been remarkably different. He is enrolled at Teneo, a true online school that combines excellent academic programmes with professional support and guidance. As a large and established organisation, Teneo has the expertise, resources, and integrated support structures to provide a streamlined learning experience for both learners and parents. Their systems promote accountability, monitor progress, and provide consistent support throughout the academic journey. Most importantly, our son is thriving academically and continues to exceed our expectations. We believe his positive experience at Teneo, together with the quality of its educators and support structures, has played a significant role in his success.

Teneo online school rating

Teneo is an okay school overall, but I do feel there are several areas where the school could improve. One of my biggest concerns is that students can sometimes feel like numbers in their classes. The teachers also sometimes shorten the lessons, which means some of the teaching or content gets cut out in order to make the lessons shorter. I feel that learners should be given enough time to properly understand what they are being taught. The online format also makes it difficult for learners to build friendships and have social interaction. There is really nowhere for students to chat, connect and make friends, so the school can feel quite isolated. The workload can also become overwhelming. This term, my child had 23 formal tests and assessments combined, which I feel is a lot for a learner to manage alongside their normal schoolwork. I also feel that there should be more excitement on Fridays. Usually, schools finish earlier on a Friday, but Teneo still finishes at 14:05. It would be nice to have something different or more relaxed at the end of the week. Another issue is the number of Monday meetings. For the past month, there have only been two meetings on a Monday. It doesn't feel right to be paying full school fees when there are regular days where there is essentially no meeting or teaching taking place. It can feel like we are paying for a school day where the learner is just left to do nothing. I also feel that Teneo can sometimes be too focused on money. There are situations where families may have financial difficulties or may not be able to immediately replace equipment when something goes wrong. For example, a girl in my child's Geography class was shouted at by a teacher because her microphone was broken. I don't think that is fair because technical problems are sometimes outside of a child's control. What if the child's parents only get paid at the end of the month and cannot afford to replace the equipment immediately? Overall, I think Teneo has potential, but I would like to see more focus on the learner experience, social interaction, reasonable workloads, proper teaching time and understanding when families experience technical or financial difficulties.

Great School for young minds

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Wonderful Online Learning Journey with Teneo My son has been attending Teneo since Grade R and is now in Grade 3, and I can honestly say that choosing Teneo has been one of the best decisions we have made for his education. What amazes me most is how comfortable and confident he has become with technology. He has grown into such a tech-savvy little boy — sometimes I joke that he is like a working professional going into a Zoom meeting when he joins his online classroom! 😂💻 The online learning environment has taught him so much more than just the academic curriculum. He has developed discipline, responsibility, time management and independence. He is now able to attend his classes, manage his schoolwork and even do his homework on his own without me having to constantly remind him. As a parent, seeing a Grade 3 child take ownership of his learning like this is incredibly rewarding. Teneo has helped him become confident in using technology while still maintaining structure and accountability in his schooling. I am extremely proud of the young learner he is becoming, and I am grateful to Teneo for being part of that journey since Grade R. Well done to the Teneo team! 👏🏽🎓💻 I would definitely recommend Teneo to parents looking for a quality online schooling option that develops independent and digitally confident learners.
