What does a 1 year warranty mean

I bought my Samsung Tab E Tablet on the 7 July 2019 and on the 4th May 2020 it just got blank, the screen got dead. I took it in to Telkom on the 6th May 2020 for repairs where i was told that it was still under warranty and would not have to pay anything for it to be repaired. I left it there (Telkom Store) and have been getting smses on the progress of the repair. This morning i got an sms from them saying that my device has been deemed out of warranty and has been quoted for R1883.52 incl Vat. Is that even allowed if it was the fault of the devise and not mine? Please assist me further as they say i have 7 days to pay that amount.
