Upgrading line speed not possible but website says I can

So a little while ago, I migrated my ADSL line from Telkom to Afrihost as the customer service at Telkom sucks and it saves me money bundling my line through my ISP. I found the speeds we were experiencing weren't suitable for my family's heavy use of streaming services so I decided to apply for an upgrade to our line.

After about 3 weeks of waiting on all the bureacracy to settle, I received a phone call from Afrihost stating that Telkom said an upgrade to my line would not be feasible as apparently the infrastructure in our area cannot support it. To which I am not surprised at as Telkom doesn't seem to care about our suburb - so much for enriching poorer communities. Would also like to add that if Telkom doesn't care for it's infrastructure here then how do they expect to get new clients? I mean over the past year we've had to call in for faults repeatedly due to the degradation of the infrastructure here! It's really pathetic.

Upon looking into this further, I noted that Telkom states very clearly in its coverage section of its website that I should be able to get up to a 10Mbps line here. Whereas when I tried upgrading from a 4Mbps to an 8Mbps they already said they couldn't help me.

I find this a gross case of false advertising! How can Telkom promise suchs speeds at one point and say they're not available when you enquire?

The only other options I have for better speeds are LTE and other wireless options but these aren't capable of giving me great speeds and room for a lot of usage as we already use around 150-200GB a month of ADSL data. Plus I don't want to pay hundreds and thousands more and be capped.

You guys are providing Fibre, VDSL and Uncapped LTE to all areas around us and leaving our neighbourhood in the dark because you guys don't think it's worth the time or money.

I've been a client of Telkom's for many years, I have an additional line under my name for my son's apartment not too far from where I'm situated and he's able to go all the way up to 40Mbps or even Fibre soon if he pleases yet I can't get an inkling of wiggle room at my own home because Telkom doesn't care for poorer communities, even when some subscribers in those communities can well-afford the services they are falsely advertising or rather giving to richer neighbourhoods.

You people make me sick. See attached screenshot of your false advertising.

Regards
Graham Hayward

Phone me on ********** 677 should you wish to actually do something about this.
Line number: ********** 536

Just thought I should also mention that I will be referring this matter to the Advertising States Authority should this matter not get the attention it deserves.

So today, 5 days after my complain, I finally get an email because obviously Telkom are too scared to admit to their flaws to me over the phone.

All I get is this:

Good day Darren,

We see that you are interested in upgrading your ADSL service, however we do also find that due to distance from the exchange being about 4.2km, hinders your options to upgrade at present.

Upon testing your attainable ADSL speed, it may be possible for you to achieve at least 6mbps, however this may impact your attenuation rate, i.e. the line resistance. This in turn, may affect your ADSL connection negatively, causing slower or intermittent service.

As per our Ts and Cs, it is advised that “the provision of Telkom's ADSL is subject to network availability, distance between closest exchange and installation address, copper line quality and line sync speed limitations”.

http://www.telkom.co.za/about_us/download/broadband_terms_and_conditions.pdf

The coverage map considers the exchange to which you are connected to, but unfortunately, does not measure the distance from your premises to the exchange.

Fibre would be suitable in this instance as “the provision of Telkom’s Fibre broadband service is subject to network availability, but service quality is not impacted by distance from exchange”.

You can register your interest in Fibre via: https://secure.telkom.co.za/today/shop/futurehood/.

========== END OF EMAIL ==========

Thanks Telkom for not actually addressing the issue here but choosing rather to tell me to deal with their false advertising. Plus, telling me to register my interest in Fibre even though they know fully well that they aren't going to provision such a service to my neighbourhood - what is gonna be your motivation if you can't even maintain the existing copper lines whereas every area surrounding our neighbourhood has amazing ADSL AND Fibre provided to them. Not just one or the other.

Absolutely pathetic. I will be forwarding this to the ASA for further review.
