Underhanded contractual fees poor service and lack of transferral infrastructure. FIBRE OPTICS CAPE TOWN

Early this year (2016) I cancelled my Landline and ADSL accounts at the Telkom Office in Tableview Cape town.

I then took on a fibre optic internet line from Telkom through Web Africa over the internet and cell phone.

At this time I was not made aware of any special cancellation cost or even that there were any contracts at all. I was not sent any contract to consider and was just told that installation and the provision of fibre equipment were FREE.

7 or so months down the line, I found myself put in a position where I had to move house.
When I approached Telkom and Web Africa for line immigration I was told that this is not a service offered by Telkom and that I HAVE TO cancel and reapply for a brand new line.

So this is the line of action I took, I had the cancellation processed and within the next day or two I was messaged and told that I owe a Clawback fee of R1700.00

I went to the Telkom branch in Stadium on Main shopping centre and was not given any service at all, I was put on the phone to the billing department, something I could have done from the comfort of my own home.

The billing department, in turn, could not explain to me what this Clawback fee was, there was no record of this fee attributed to my ID number and account with them. I was also kindly informed that I was still being charged for the line rental of my ADSL line, cancelled months ago in Tableview.

On top of all of this, it has just passed the four-week mark set out to me for the installation of my new fibre optic line.

My only response from Telkom so far has been a bland automated email containing links to all of their contractual and legal documents (pages upon pages) for me to grind through on my own trying to find meaning.

Lewis Silo
