Unacceptable hidden fees

I currently have aa 80GB LTE contract with Telkom, valid until 1 January 2026, at a monthly cost of R220. In September, I missed my payment date but settled the account before month-end. In October, although the required R220 was available in my account, Telkom attempted to debit R421 instead, which failed.

Upon enquiry, I was informed that Telkom imposes a R200 penalty fee for any failed debit order, even if the account is paid within the same month. This charge was never disclosed to me when entering into the contract. As a result, Telkom now claims I owe R850 for two “missed” payments, despite my consistent record of paying the agreed monthly amount.

I have three months remaining on my contract, totaling R660. Given my unemployment status and limited financial means, I am unable to pay these additional fees, which I consider unreasonable and unprecedented compared to other mobile networks. My FNB service advisor has confirmed that banks do not charge Telkom for declined debits, but rather the client.

I am committed to honoring my contractual obligation by continuing to pay the agreed monthly fee of R220. However, I cannot accept or pay the added penalty charges, as they were not disclosed upfront and are financially unmanageable.
