Telkom's rotten and ********* business practices

My data line is ********** . Telkom's business practices leave much to be desired. I fell into the trap of taking out a contract with them during the November. Now that they have successfully snared me into a contract they are showing me the middle finger. I responded to the R99 per month deal of the month which included 10gig of data from 12 midnight to 7am, 2gig data from 7am to 12 midnight plus a Huawei Wi-Fi modem. I requested a zero spending limit when my data gets depleted so that I could top up with prepaid airtime and avoid paying out of bundle data rates. Telkom did exactly the opposite. My usage went into out of bundle and billed around R300 for that. I went to the Merlyn store during December and was told this is has been fixed, the limit will take effect from 1 January. Indeed my January bills was around R120. My February bill has reverted back to almost R300. I went to the Mall@Reds Telkom store and was told my spending limit is R500. The zero limit on my account was valid for one month only, January. For the limit to be permanent I had to phone the call centre. I asked the consultant to call the call centre and I spoke to a call centre agent who promised that the zero limit will be effective 1 April. Meanwhile I have to pay the R299. Anyone dealing with Telkom please be aware of their ethics or lack thereof before dealing with them.

On Friday I logged onto my profile on the Telkom website and to my surprise found that my monthly 2gig data allocation for March has now been depleted and my out bundle bill is almost R100. Which means I now owe Telkom R400? What baffles me is that when you use only prepaid data and no contract, Telkom sends you a notice when your data is about to get depleted. If you don’t top up you get cut out and lose internet connectivity until you top up. Why do they decide not do it when you are on contract? Why do they not give you the choice to use or not to use the more expensive out of bundle data? Your guess is as good as mine, greed, and rotten ethics. My contract still has twenty months to run; it is going to a very very long twenty months for me. But it will eventually come to an end. Cancelling now will attract R800 cancellation fee and penalties for the rest of the outstanding twenty months on my contract, plus minus R2000. I have diarised the 1st August 2018 and set a reminder to send them the required two months’ notice of termination of the contract. It will be a very happy bye bye and good riddance.

Update on Refs AI ********** and ********** 6. A very friendly telkom call centre agent named Sibusiso made contact with me about a week or two ago informing me that the data charges have been reversed. That is quite noble and is to be appreciated. The charges have however not been reversed yet and no timeframe was given as to when this would happen. I will update further as soon as the matter has been resolved. Finjo

Further update. Telkom has lived up to its promise of reversing the cahrges as promised and the zero spend limit has been resolved and I hope this stays this way. Though this does not compensate the time wasted visiting your stores three times and waiting in queues, at least there was a positive and resolution. Kudos to that. Hoping this is the last time I have to deal with this matter.
