Telkom rogue debit orders continuously being deducted from my bank account
My Telkom debit order for 5 November 2018 return unpaid unknown to me as I had another unplanned debit order that went off early, There was insufficient funds which resulted in the debit order returning unpaid. I received an sms notification from my bank on 6th November 2018 for the returned payment. I took the initiative of phoning Telkom to obtain banking details and I then settled the amount by EFT. Fast forward to the 15th November 2018 when the nightmare begins. I received a bank sms notification that a Telkom debit order returned unpaid which resulted in an unpaid bank charge. I phoned Telkom and spoke to Sinonhlanhla on querying this, and was informed that this was run for the December 2018 amount. I asked for a refund of the bank charge due to insufficient funds, and due to the unauthorised debit order deduction of December's debit order amount from my account. I emailed her the bank statement showing these transactions. I also asked her if they are going to try and rerun this December 2018 debit order to which she rep**** no and that she has made a note of everything on the system. I thought that this was the lat of it.
Fast forward again to the 20th November 2018, I yet again received an sms from my bank for the very same December 2018 debit order which was run yet again and returned unpaid. This unauthorised rogue debit order had now pushed my account into overdraft, which generates interest daily on the overdraft balance. I phoned Telkom yet again and spoke to Slindile and asked her to check what notes are on the system before I could proceed. She responded by saying that Sinonhlanhla left a note explaining why my bill was so high ! It said nothing about the debit order query that I had logged. I had to regurgitate the entire situation to her because of the prior inefficiency. Slindile responded by saying that as soon as a debit order goes unpaid, it is IMMEDIATELY handed to their lawyers. They do not phone to inform you that your debit order is unpaid and give you a chance to remedy this. They do not wait 30 days before handing the account over. She further stated that the recovery of the rejected debit order as well as the next month debit order is then immediately recoverable by their lawyers, who will run both debit orders. She said that this is in the fine print in the contract, When I questioned her as to why the Telkom stores dont bring this to the attention of customers prior to signing a contract, she stated that the assumption is that the debit order will be paid. This is unacceptable as this should be the first thing that is brought to the attention of a customer prior to signing a contract. I am sure that a vast number of individuals, myself included, cannot afford a double debit order deduction. This is very ********* to say the least. I have also instructed Slindile to ask the Telkom lawyers to stop running these unauthorised debit orders off my account. Only time will tell if this will be comp**** with.
I have emailed Slindile both my bank statements as well as my EFT payment and am currently awaiting a response.
