TELKOM NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE
Good day! I recently signed a 1gig free me cellphone contract with Telkom via the Apple Store. The contract gives you 1g of data amongst other things like free whatsapp, etc. It also gives you free 30gigs of data over 3 months. I have two other Telkom wifi contracts for a number of years. However, i received my bill and i was charged R500.00 for data usage. When i chatted with Thulani from the customer care, he told me that when roaming on MTN you are charged for the data. Confused, I told him that i dont have any MTN contracts. He then told me that Telkom has a partnership with MTN and if there is no Telkom service in an area, MTN picks up service and the customer is charged for that usage. I was flabbergasted, as over all of these years, I was never once told about MTN picking up Telkom service, etc. I told the agent that I was not ever informed of this and believed that I was using the data that was given to me, FREE on my contract and he was unconcerned about that. I asked him will I be credited as I was not informed as this was never explained to me and he simply said no, usage has to be paid for.
Telkom cannot be allowed to falsely advertise contracts under the premise of free data and then not inform and educate their innocent customers about partnerships that will in turn affect our already drained pockets.
I believe that i will be liable if i was told as i would have never used this sim card to begin with but now i am R500 out of pocket and Telkom staff who are meant to be assisting the customers, could not be bothered.
Can i go to the consumer council with this?
