Telkom makes it utterly impossible to cancel services

Last year, I moved out of my apartment and on 10 January, I sent my first service cancellation request to Telkom. Subsequently, I sent three further service cancellation requests on 8, 22 and 30 March.

No one from Telkom contacted me, despite four different automated responses indicating that someone would do so within 21 working days.

I then spoke to three online chat consultants and three telephonic consultants, all of whom indicated that they could not assist me, that it was impossible to contact the Cancellations Department directly, and that I would have to go in store.

I went in store (Rosebank branch) on 22 April and the manager said that the Cancellations Department was backlogged and that there was nothing she could do. After I protested, she eventually made a phone call and I spoke to a consultant called Yondela Mpahlwa (Assistant Manager, OPS, Billing Department). Yondela told me to email my documents. I never heard from her again.

To date, five months after my first attempt to cancel my line, and despite doing everything in my power since, I continue to receive accounts for monthly subscription charges.

What makes this even more outrageous is that it is impossible to contact the Cancellations Department to resolve this matter.

It is hard not to be cynical about a business that makes it impossible to cancel services. My recommendation to everyone is to not sign up with Telkom in the first place.
