Telkom Frustrations and POPI Contraventions!

When Telkom launched their new R799 per month uncapped LTE Service I was really excited, even more when I found that my house is covered.

On the 3rd of June 2016 I did my application and was informed that it was successful, weeks later when nothing happened I made contact with Telkom only to be informed that it was subsequently declined, I tried to get the reason behind this but nobody could tell me, my only assumption is that it proved to difficult for the lazy telkom employee to actually do their job so they rather just declined it.

Not a problem I figured, I will get my business partner to apply and was once again told that it was successful this was followed up by a phone call to verify various details such as bank account numbers etc etc incl an email on the 23rd of June (Already much later than the 7-10 working days promised) from a Miss Nonkonza Nyama containing personal information of other Telkom customers working at EOH and ABSA (So much for adherence to the POPI act which BTW could construe a massive financial penalty to Telkom) my colleague then responded to Nonkonza saying incorrect information was sent to which she rep****

"MR JAN

ON SYSTEMS IT SHOWED 199 I EVEN IASKED IF YOU WERE APPLYING FOR IT

WE WILL BE ABLE TO CHANGE YOUR PACKAGE TO 799

THE REFF NO I GAVE YOU WAS TO SHOW THT THERE WAS AN APPLICATION DONE

THE AI NO YOU WILL GET FROM BACK OFFICE

I DO APLOGISE FOR THE MISTAKE

PLEASE CAN YOU SEND ME YOUR ID NO"

Im still trying to decipher most of this email however it is a clear indication of how qualified Telkom staff are by responding to customers in ALL CAPS with spelling, grammar and various other mistakes.

This was then followed by numerous phone calls from myself to Telkom to establish whether everything was fine, the responses included the following:

1. Everything is in order and I can collect the device from a Telkom store, I then drove to my local Telkom store only to be in formed that the information received was incorrect (this happened 2 times)

2. The application was escalated and a customer representative will contact me, which never happened (I got this response 4 times)

3. Your application was declined due to banking details, banking details would then be provided again but nothing happens. (This happened 3 times)

On Friday the 8th of July (Now more than a month since my original application) I managed to track down the individual working with the application and sent him a direct email venting my frustrations and threatening to expose him personally for my troubled telkom experience, this was followed by another email on Friday indicating that my application was once again successful, being the optimist I figured this would be the end of a very long and frustrating road travelled with Telkom.

Monday we were contacted again to verify account details etc, it was once again provided and all checked out, we were then informed that everything is successful and that my device will be shipped.

Not having heard anything from Telkom since Monday I thought Ill give them a call again on 12 July 2016 to verify when I can expect my device only to be informed that it was rejected due to banking details.

So in summary:

1. Telkom has breached their own agreement by stipulating everything will be finalised and delivered within 7 - 10 working days.

2. Telkom has contravened the POPI act by forwarding me personal information of other customers working at EOH and Telkom (This btw is punishable by law and a significant financial penalty can be imposed)

3. I have been ill informed by Telkom personnel more than 5 times

4. I have spent more than 2 hours on the phone with Telkom trying to resolve this matter

5. I have wasted petrol driving to Telkom stores due to Telkom,s inability to provide actual and factual information

6. I have wasted hours trying to resolve this matter

This will now be my final effort to resolve the matter, if not contacted by a Telkom representative by this afternoon I will take the following steps:

1. Cancel all my existing personal and business related telkom contracts

2. Make contact with my friends at Michalsons Attorneys RE the POPI Act contravention

3. Make contact with the individuals who's information was leaked to me to inform them that this has occured and persuade them to take further steps RE POPI and their personal information.

Still no contact after I sent an aditional two emails to your Scoial Media Team.

It is clear that as a company you have no regard for your customers, their privacy or the law for that matter.

I will now proceed to approach the press with regard to your poor service delivery and more importantly your disregard for among other things the POPI Act.
