Telkom - Fibre to the Home is a Joke!

I live in Bryanston, JHB in the heart of Telkom's new FTTH roll out zone. I quite literally have a ****l of Telkom fibre hanging from a pole outside my front gate. The distance from the pole to my front door cant be more than about 15 to 20 meters.

I have been trying for more than 6 months now to get fibre into my home. On two prior occassions I have had Telkom sales representatives physically present at my gate telling me that my road is covered and would I like to apply for fibre. On both such occassions I have completed all of the requisite paperwork. I have further app**** twice online since then hoping that that might produce some sort of action from Telkom.

In about March of this year, I received a phonecall from Telkom saying that I dont qualify for FTTH because I live in the wrong area. I tried to explain to the person calling me that they must be mistaken because I had checked the coverage map several times prior to applying. They merely suggested that I apply again - which I did. I went back to check again on the coverage map and noticed that Telkom had now inexplicably greyed out my small 6 unit complex despite the fact that everywhere else on my road was covered including another larger complex some 100 meters from my gate. Not to mention the fact that my complex already has Telkom ADSL infrastructure and cabinets throughtout to assist with the last mile.

I then attempted to contact Telkom's fibre department directly - which is basically impossible if you're planning to speak with anyone who actually knows what's going on. After 4 hours on the phone I managed to get through to a Levard Links - who, whilst not a part of the FTTH project, at the time seemed very helpful. After much explanation (including the fact that I had a ****l of Fibre outside my front gate) I got Levard to open an internet browser and have a look at my greyed out complex on the coverage map. He laughed when he saw the map and agreed with me that something was definitely wrong and that the problem was not distance as he originally suspected. He undertook to resolve the matter with the appropriate person in Cape Town!? In true Telkom form after about a week, Levard stopped responding to my mails and phonecalls requesting an update.

Why it is that we as consumers have to beg and plead for Telkom to take our hard earned money in exchange for their services is beyond me - but this is me pleading! Can someone who senior and knowledgable in the Telkom FTTH division please contact me and arrange for fibre to be installed in my home. Please take my money!

Reviewer Update

Well, its been one week since I posted my complaint and apart from a generic email response, no meaningful correspondence from Telkom whatsoever. What a surprise!
