Telkom delaying repayment of an erroneous over payment
Over a week ago I was paying accounts by way of internet banking. My Telkom bill was R334. 78 which I loaded. Just before confirming the payment the decimal point disappeared and the amount that went through was R33 478.00. I immediately contacted RMB who advised me that they cannot assist with erroneous payments to certain beneficiaries of which Telkom is one (I am yet to receive a logical explanation for this). So I called Telkom. The average wait time for a call to Telkom is 37 minutes. The call center clerk advised me that they could not assist until the funds reflected on the account. I called every day and at some stage was advised that the funds were reflecting. I was then instructed which documents to send through which I did immediately. Two days ago I established that the documents had been uploaded. Yesterday I spoke with a clerk who understood the gravity of the situation and assured me that the matter "had now been escalated" and that I could expect payment within a day. Today I called and spoke with a different clerk who advised me that it will take 7 to 14 business days to process and that there is no difference between a matter that has been escalated and a regular matter. She also acknowledged that it was a significant sum of money, that in these difficult times I should receive a refund as a matter of urgency and that it was my money and not Telkom's so it should be returned to me. There is no justification for such a delay other than that it is in Telkom's interest to delay refunds for as long as possible irrespective of the ethics.
