Telkom cancellation nightmare
In May 2018 I canceled my ADSL line with Cybersmart, my ISP. The cancellation was affected in June, and in July 2018 I canceled my Telkom land line. Telkom then reversed the cancellation without informing me and continued to bill me. I have spoken to Telkom on numerous occasions since then, and was told two differing stories. One, that the account was suspended because it was in arrears and therefore could not be canceled. I pointed out that the line was only in arrears due to the fact that Telkom reversed the cancellation, nevertheless, wishing to speed up the process I paid the arrears and the Telkom line was reinstated, and I canceled it again via their website. Again, I began receiving bills and again discovered the cancellation had been reversed. This time I was told it was because my ADSL line hadn't been canceled. I pointed out that the line had been cancelled in May and provided the order number for the cancellation given to my ISP cybersmart to Telkom: ********** 52A. Telkom then said they would escalate the dispute (for the third time 22 October) and once again, nothing was done and they continued to bill me. On 7 November I spoke to Claritia at the Telkom call center, and again explained the situation and again was told the ADSL line was open. Cybersmart assures me the line is closed on their side and open on Telkom's side. Cybersmart logged a fault with Telkom to try and get Telkom to close the line on their side, which Telkom still refuses to do, claiming it's a Cybersmart problem. Cybersmart has the order number proving Telkom is the problem, and can do nothing to assist me. I am the consumer stuck in the middle unable to get Telkom to do anything to assist. Meanwhile, I attempted to apply for a homeloan and discovered that Telkom has listed me with the credit bureaus for arrears payments. On 8 November, I paid the arrears in desperation to get the bad credit rating removed, but Telkom has not yet sent a letter to the credit bureaus in spite of the fact the account is not in arrears. A member of Telkom's customer service called me on 22 November to apologise for the months of frustration and promised me the line would be canceled and all charges backdating to July would be reversed. This, of course, was not done. I am now in the position that I will lose my home if my bond is not approved, and my bond cannot be approved because Telkom has a bad credit (paid in November) registered against my name. Telkom is an absolute Kafkaesque nightmare of a company. Having attempted over the course of six months to resolve this, I have complained to the consumer council and telecommunications Ombudsman. Perhaps some outside pressure from HelloPeter will also help finally resolve this matter.
