I had a Smartvoice Basic landline installed in my elderly parent's home. After installation they were told to charge the phone for 48 hours before it will be operational. Four days later still nothing. I called Telkom on their behalf and after hours of holding i was told the phone was activated this very morning. First they refused to assist as i could not recall my mother's cellnumber of about 10 years ago, so i hung up and called back and spoke to someone else who assisted. Ok so now my parents can make outgoing calls but cannot receive no incoming calls. I am extremely frustrated and disappointed by the fact that its such a battle to get through to Telkom and when you do its such red tape to get assistance. i feel the technicians who attended to the installation should have taken the serial numbers on the phone box down and reported it to Telkom for activation. If i did not call Telkom this morning to establish what the delay in activation was no one would have known that the sim needed activation. Ok so lets see if after maybe a few days we can receive incoming calls. A few months ago I had this telephone line deactivated as it was a normal landline (no fancy wifi, fibre, data nonsense) just a simple landline for my elderly parents to use to make normal calls. Suddenly this phone was diverted into a Smartvoice phone costing them an additional R399 without their consent or permission or given options of cheaper packages. Therefore i deactived the line and reinstalled a new affordable line for them but now problems again. When is this going to end. I understand Telkom must move with the times and compete with other service providers but do not forget your clients and supporters who have kept your doors open for almost 40 - 50 years, the elderly people. Attend to their needs as well, needs that might not have moved with the times and make or keep certain things simple and affordable for them still. Not everyone makes use of data, wifi or fibre (especially some people in their 70's) so keep those in mind as well and work around that. Dont just upgrade their phones, bill them without consulting or explaining the change or atleast make personal contact (not sms) and explain their options.
