Phonebooks a WASTE

Who uses printed phone books from Telkom? I don't know a single person who does.

I have a comment on Telkom in that regard. According to Wikipedia "Telkom is a semi-privatised, 39% state-owned enterprise." I think it's relevant in the context of the discussion about pension funds being used to prop up ailing SOE's.

Every year a copy of the 'Phonebook' for the area is dropped off. Aside from the environmental impact (heaps of paper going into the bin and back into the environment) who actually uses these things in the 21st century?

A deeper look into the 'Phonebook' reveals that a number of SOE's have advertising posted in it, along with MANY government departments. Who pays for this? I would suggest that this is a huge money making **** and it all comes courtesy of the ever shrinking tax base.

This is yet another vivid illustration that when bureaucrats are spending other peoples money they really don't give a "Bleep". Some might argue that the advertising (excluding non SOE or Government entities - by implication taxpayers) pays for it. I would really like to see evidence of that and would gladly retract if that is the case. BUT I don't think so!

Yet another example of why every effort must be made to protect pension funds. If political leaders show that they care as much about our funds as they do about their personal wealth, they might have some credibility.

My question to Telkom is why they continue to send out these Phonebooks? Is there a way for people to opt out in the SAME way we do when we receive unsolicited calls, text messages and email?
