No warranty on 3 day old router apparently power surge or lightning struck

Does not repair a 3 day old router struck by lighting. Was advised to purchase another router. This is a waste of my time and money. Surely there should be a warranty for this otherwise I'm told that I need to switch off the router during bad weather. Well what happens if I'm not at home?
