******* debit orders leading to negative listing at credit bureau

I was offered an LTE Smart Broadband Uncapped package from Mobile Talk on behalf of Telkom during July 2016. I cancelled the contract within the cool-off period due to poor download speed. Everything was returned to their warehouse. I also have a Telkom Mobile contract for a cell phone.

During August 2016 and October 2016 my bank account was debited *******ly for thousands of rands. Every time I had to phone the dreaded Telkom call centre to be told that they made a mistake and would refund me, but time and again the banking costs and wasted time were my loss. I contacted ABSA to try and stop the debit orders but they informed me that I have to cancel it with Telkom. How is that possible if the specific LTE contract was already cancelled? I never received any invoices for these debit orders and my Telkom Mobile invoice never reflected any other costs. There was no outstanding or any other fee mentioned on any of my accounts, except for the normal monthly charges.

In May 2017 another debit order went of from my account for R6 973 for Telkom. Over 4 days I spent 195 minutes on the phone with Telkom’s call centre, held the line to speak to agents, was put on hold after I explaining my story, referred to another department, cut off, repeating the same narrative over and over again etc. Every time they informed me that they didn’t initiate the debit order of R6 973. ABSA reversed the debit order and traced it to Nudebt, a debt collecting company. Nudebt personnel were rude and unhelpful over the telephone and referred me back to Telkom. How can Telkom refer this so-called “debt” to a debt collecting company without contacting me or sending me any invoices?

ABSA did a credit check on me and found that Telkom listed me on 31/10/2016 for defaulting on a payment of R6 973. This is totally incomprehensible. Telkom lists me for “default” after they have told me on 26/10/2016 the last R4 999 debit order was a mistake and even before it was refunded into my account in November 2016. How is it possible to be listed at the credit bureau for Telkom’s faulty and ******* debit orders? Even worse, how can they list me without even contacting me? According to the National Credit Act of 2005: "72 Every person has a right to be advised by a credit provider within the prescribed time before any prescribed adverse information concerning the person is reported by it to a credit bureau.”

This is extremely frustrating, a waste of time not to mention all the money lost on banking fees for Telkom’s mistakes. How do I get my previous unblemished credit record back?

Noleen, please note that your official private business reply on behalf of Telkom with reference number AI ********** means absolutely nothing. There was no follow up! In fact, a further R5 298 was debited against my account in June in spite of my request for invoices.

This is pathetic. Telkom's customer support is non existent. Telkom offers no answers to pressing matters. There is no explanation for the ******** conduct. Obviously Telkom ignores the National Credit Act of 2005.
