Greed or *****

This is a contract that I’ve been trying to cancel since April. It has now been handed over to NUDEBT collection agency. They’re now saying that Telkom won’t cancel this contract because there is an amount of debt outstanding R 297.03, for which they have debited from my account yesterday. I have been reversing the debits since June 2016. I realise that this is not a lot of money but, 4 months to cancel a contract!!!, which has a month’s notice.

Telkom make an awful lot of money by forcing these debits through even though the client no longer wants it. Contract No. ********** 974. Acc no. ********** 397.

I had a contract with Telkom for a Tab and 2.5 gigs of data. This contract ended in February which I duly submitted a cancellation letter (18/01/2016) which was accepted. I was then phoned by an agent who offered me the same 2.5 gigs of data, for R 99.00 a month. This was based on a month to month contract which I could cancel at any time. I accepted it on that basis.

I went into a Telkom branch in Musgrave Durban in April to cancel that contract. It was recorded and I was given a case number.

Here are a list of case numbers I received from Telkom every time I went in to query the cancellation.

18 Jan 2016 – ********** 1 (Cancellation of original contract)
11 April 2016 – ********** 7 (Cancellation of sim only contract. This has not been done to date)
17 May 2016 – ********** 7
********** 0
June 2016 - ********** 9
15 July 2016 – ********** 6

I receive calls from Telkom regarding their service and I get told that the matter will get escalated so the problem can get solved but nothing happens. All my calls to them amount to nil but every month my account is debited for the contract amount. I got tired of Telkom so I started reversing the debits. This is my money and they can’t just force these amounts on their clients.

Please tell me if you can sort this problem out or do I need to contact a lawyer or some consumer watch groups so that my credit record is not tarnished by their incompetence.

I removed the sim card from the TAB so it is not in use.
