False promises/Useless service

On Friday 11 November I received an SMS from Telkom saying that my service will be interrupted within 48hrs if I don't pay R1463.15. I proceeded to pay R1436.15, which is clearly a typing or input error, but my mistake nonetheless.

On Tuesday, 15 November, my service was interrupted and I received an SMS to this effect. I phoned to enquite why and the lady, Candice rep**** very ****y at some point something to the effect of: "Angie, it's not my problem the screen is telling me that". Nonetheless, I immediately paid R100. I phoned to check, that same evening, and the lady I spoke to said that it is reflecting and she's escalating the issue as my service was on trial and out of collection. I expected to wait 48hrs as their SMS states: "Restoration of service can take up to 48hrs".

I assumed it would be 48 working hours, so maybe Thursday evening, Friday morning latest, 18 November latest. I phoned on Thursday and the agent I spoke to said that the matter will be escalated. I phoned on Friday, 18 November, service still suspended, and the agent I spoke to assured me that by end-of-business Friday, my service will be connected. Guess what? Didn't happen!

I phoned on Sunday, 20 November, the agent told me that it should've been connected bla-bla-bla, but the issue will be escalated. Yesterday, 21 November, my service is still disconnected. I spoke to Sihle, a manager, ref # ********** 1, who said, wait for it, he's escalating the issue and I could expect to be reconnected latest this morning, 22 November.

Guess what? My service is still disconnected. I spoke to an agent about an hour ago and she used excuses from the amount after reflecting only reflects within 72hrs(how does that even make sense); the service should reconnect automatically when payment reflects, but in my case it didn't so it takes 72hrs; that my payment only reflected on the 16th(which then, by her reasoning, my service should've been reconnected on the 18th, Friday); oh, and that I'm understanding "Restoration of service takes up to 48hrs" incorrectly, according to her, it should say or means my service will be disconnected within 48hrs. My understanding of the English language: Restoration=restore, correction, fix and "up to" translate to maximum time, no longer than etc. But the best is, she said she would escalate the issue and when I got really peeved she said "sorry for the inconvenience ".

TELKOM?!? What's the point of having a call centre with agents if they are only trained to read off a screen or a script and if they can't actually help me? What's the point of having a call centre if you can't deliver a service and your agents each have a different version of events? And TELKOM, what's the point of being a service delivery company and telecommunications service provider if you can provide neither?

I can't wait to cancel my service in January 2017, messaging doves will deliver a better service or maybe even the South African Post Office!!!

Hi Noleen,

Thank you for your reply, but I think this time it's too little too late. Well, not that my issue has been resolved as I type this message.

I've reported the matter to the Consumer Commission.
