Exorbitant costs and confidential information
I called the Call Centre with a service request. That in itself was a mission... none of their website paths matched what I needed. I eventually emailed, and after 4 days got a response to say I must call 10210. Which I did.... I moved my router across to the other side of the room, and all I needed was the connecting wire to be shortened and reconnected, as it was many metres too long, and I was having to tie it up into a bundle. I would have done it myself if this was permissible! The Call Centre agent informed me that any service within a residence costs R1000, as it is treated as an installation. Needless to say, I was fuming! We are getting fibre soon, but hard to say when. So I calmed down and asked her to go ahead with the service order. She asked me how I usually pay my Telkom account, and I told her by EFT. She then had the AUDACITY to ask me what my monthly income is. (No doubt on the orders of her boss/their system). I told her it was confidential and I would not give it to her, but she stated that the service order would be rejected if this was not provided. Needless to say, I made an amount up, and told her that I was doing so. Surely they have my credit history on record? I have been paying regularly for close on 5 years in my current residence, and probably for about 40 years before that!! Completely ridiculous! I was totally disgusted on both accounts: the R1000 charge and the question re my monthly income. Roll on fibre.... goodbye Telkom!!
