If ever a business tolled its own death knell, it is Telkom . Almost everyone I know speaks of Telkom's erratic billing. I thought I was the exception until February 2024. I have a contract of three SIM-only products. Two Free Me of about R110 each (total:R220) and 10 Gig LTE (R59). So, all in all, I pay about R279 per month. For February, another charge of R99 for Smartbroadband (backdated for 1 year) was added to the same LTE. The total bill for February came to about R1466, instead of about R279) . A cursory look at my account over the year would have shown that: (a) my contract comes to about R279 per month (b) it is impossible to assign two different data packages to the same SIM card. But this has taken Telkom over a month to resolve. This month, the blunder (or idiocy) continued: t:hey charged me for not honouring the R1466 debit order until the amount was corrected and, also, charged two different LTE packages on the same SIM card. This brings me to my question: why is Telkom billing so erratic? Because computers are good at routine processes like billing. Or are people interfering with the process for their own benefit (because, in the end, consumers pay disputed amounts, under legal threats). How has the Consumer Commission left this for so long? Telkom has been, slowly, killings its own business, and no one seems to care that customers are leaving in droves.
