Disconnected landline due to Telkom error

On 23 October I wrote a letter to Telkom Customer Services at Private Bag X75, Pretoria, asking that my ADSL line be disconnected. I wished to keep the landline, but no longer wanted internet service. I received no reply.

I am 80 years old, so standing in queues is difficult. In February 2017 I visited the Walmer Park, Port Elizabeth Telkom Customer Service branch and repeated my request. The assistant could not find a record of my request for the ADSL service to be discontinued, but started the process.

He asked if I still wanted to keep the telephone line, and I confirmed this. I was due to pay my telephone account, but he suggested that I wait until the ADSL had been disconnected, and any related costs had been added. I therefore did not pay my account on that day.

The next day I discovered that my landline had been disconnected. I contacted Telkom and was told that it was because I had not paid my account. I explained what had happened, and subsequently paid the amount on the current invoice, but my line was not reconnected. That was on 13 February 2017.

Another visit to Walmer Park resulted in my being given a reference number 120617-51 and I received a follow-up SMS to say that my new landline would be installed on 7 March 2017, and a new number allocated

I do not want a new number - I merely want the Telkom error corrected, and my landline reinstated.

I am particularly disappointed that Telkom cannot take responsibility for their error!
