Telkom are being purposefully underhanded with their ADSL lines. They manually set the line speed slower than what you pay for. Over the past month I've been on 10mbps, 8mpbs and 4mbps connection speeds and no matter which one you're on, the connection speed slowly drops (over a period of a few days) until it reaches about 60% of the advertised speed. It's been confirmed that my line supports 10mpbs (this is based on Telkom's own website as well as the statistics on line attenuation and SNR). Which is why it seemed rather bizarre that I could not achieve the advertised speed for more than a few days before the connection speed slowly dropped. I started out on 10mpbs and then the speed dropped to 9mpbs, then to 8mpbs and then finally rested on 6mpbs. I then downgraded to 8mpbs line and the speed initially went back from the 6mpbs it had settled on back to 8mpbs. Then over the course of a few days the connection speed again started dropping, settling on 5mpbs. Afrihost (my ISP) confirmed that on the system Telkom had manually set the speed to 5mpbs and that they could only log a fault with Telkom. I recommend that all ADSL customers check their speeds regularly! WE ARE BEING CHEATED!
