Contract Cancellation

On the 6th June I received my Telkom invoice. Upon opening it I noticed that my debit amount was less than usual. Upon calling the Telkom help desk, I was informed that my instalment is less this month because the contract is expiring at the end of June. Surprised, I asked the customer care consultant if could cancel or upgrade, only to be informed that cancellations had to be done in the 22nd month, and that if I cancel now I will still be liable to the full subscription in July which was close to R1000.

I informed her that I could not afford that, and was very unhappy with the fact that I had never received any notification with regards to this. Receiving no joy with the care line, I later went to the Telkom branch in the Liberty Mall in Pietermaritzburg and spoke to ‘”Jaunita De Lange” the customer consultant in the branch. She was very helpful and friendly while I explained my story.

I explained to her that I had just found out my contract was up for renewal and had never been contacted, I was willing to take another contract as I was told by customer care line that it was too late to cancel and I would be liable to pay the full fee at the end of June. I also told her that I was leaving to work overseas for a year at the end of June and was very worried about how I was going to get this sorted before I left. If it was going to be a problem I would upgrade and give it to my sister to use and make the payments on my behalf.

After I explained everything to her and she confirmed with a co-worker that the contract is expiring, and that it would be cancelled by the end of the month due to the fact that I was immigrating, I decided to cancel it and filled out all the relevant paperwork. I was then given a case no: ********** 0 ,

Jaunita asked me to mail her toward the middle of the month so she could follow up and let me know the status of the cancellation. I emailed her on the 21st June to check on the progress, to be informed that the cancellation has not gone through yet, but that I would be kept informed.

I sent another mail on 24th June but have heard nothing back since the 1st response on the 21st

I will be flying out on the 1st July and if this is not sorted it will cause a huge problem. Seeing as the contract is cancelling at the end of June and that Telkom never contacted me to either upgrade or cancel this line I don’t feel that I should now be held liable to pay the full fee in July when I will be out of contract, and no longer in the country. Surely it cannot take three weeks for a cancellation to be processed, If this matter is not sorted out within 48 hours I will have no choice but to contact the relevant ombudsman to have this matter sorted out
