Consumption of data pathetic

I have a problem with the way in which the data is counting on my wi fi router. I have used the data for only 6 hours and it has consumed 4 gigs already. I was only on whats app and twitter not for even 30 minutes. I did now download anything and I do not have any background app refreshing on my phone. The same thing happened last week.
