Cancelling ADSL service

During the time that I had my ADSL agreement with Telkom I cannot complain about their service. However, my advise to people out there is stay away, unless you want to be tied into an agreement you can never escape.

On 30th July 2017, I contacted Telkom to request that they cancel my ADSL service since I app**** for Fibre Service through another service provider. I did this because they told me they could not offer this service in my area even though Vumatel already installed cable in our area.

On the 1st August when I called again to verify that my service was cancelled, I was told it was not, and that I had to send an email with a copy of my ID to an email address.

Since my contract was already past its initial period I was now on a month-to-month contract and I was therefore sent my email on the same day indicating that the last day of service will be on the 31st August (effectively giving a full calendar month’s notice). When I received my next account on 10th September 2018, it reflected more than double the normal installment payable.

Why must I pay for September when August was my notice month and I gave one calendar months’ notice timeously.

Since then I have called multiple times and was advised to send documentation to multiple email addresses.

I also attempted to close my account online to no avail.

The last time I called, I was told that my account cannot be closed because it has a balance. I am not going to settle this account. I gave adequate notice as required by their agreement and I paid for August like I should have. I see no reason why Telkom thinks they can bind me into a never-ending agreement with their bureaucracy and then still continue to bill me ad-infinitum.

I would like Telkom to resolve this issue, but I am willing to see them in court if that is what it takes, because they are not acting in good faith and I believe they are in fact acting *******ly and in contravention of the Consumer Protection Act.

I fail to understand how they can justify forcing someone to remain in a contract against their will that has a legal exit clause that was fully comp**** with and still continue to bill as if notice was never given.
