AI Review Summary

Based on recent customer reviews, Smeg South Africa is seen as a premium brand whose striking Italian design is undermined by durability and after-sales problems. Owners repeatedly report kettles peeling, rusting or leaking, sinks discolouring or cracking, and ovens, cookers, dishwashers and washer dryers failing soon after purchase. Complaints centre on warranty claims being declined, blame shifted to customers, costly part-only repairs, and unanswered emails to spares and service teams. A few customers praise fast technician callouts arranged through retailers, showing service can be excellent when it works.

Unhappy Customer

In January, I purchased Smeg kitchen appliances from Hirsch's Benoni. As I was still saving money for kitchen cupboards, I kept the appliances until I could afford to have the cupboards installed. Approximately three months ago, I finally managed to install my new kitchen cupboards and had the appliances installed. To my disappointment, after using the oven fewer than three times, I discovered that it was leaking water. This leakage caused damage to my newly built kitchen cupboards, leaving me extremely frustrated and disappointed. A technician was sent to inspect the oven, and his initial assessment was that the problem might be caused by a faulty seal. My complaint was subsequently referred to the Assistant Manager, Ms Yugeshni Moodley, who informed me that they would only replace the seal as a goodwill gesture. I find this response unacceptable. How can replacing a seal on an oven that has been used fewer than three times be presented as a goodwill gesture when the appliance itself appears to have a defect? I purchased a new appliance with the reasonable expectation that it would function properly and not cause damage to my property. I have spent almost R100,000 on Smeg kitchen appliances alone. This represents a significant financial investment, and I expected better quality, reliability and customer service. What makes this situation even more disappointing is that the proposed solution focuses only on replacing the seal, without addressing the damage caused to my cupboards. Nobody has provided me with a satisfactory explanation regarding who will take responsibility for repairing the damage or whether the oven itself will be replaced. I am not asking for a favour or a goodwill gesture. I am asking for a fair and reasonable resolution to a problem involving an appliance that has barely been used. I believe Hirsch's and Smeg should take responsibility for investigating the defect and addressing the resulting damage fairly, rather than leaving me to carry the financial burden. My requested resolution is as follows: A proper technical investigation into the cause of the water leakage. Consideration of replacing the oven rather than simply replacing the seal. A fair resolution regarding the cost of repairing the damaged kitchen cupboards. A formal response from management explaining how this matter will be resolved. I am raising this complaint on HelloPeter because I am deeply disappointed by the way my concern has been handled so far. Spending such a substantial amount on premium appliances should not leave a customer feeling that their concerns are being dismissed. I hope that making this matter public will encourage Hirsch's Benoni and Smeg to take my complaint seriously and provide a satisfactory resolution

SMEG cannot do basic repairs, throw away philosophy

Hardly used SMEG toaster inner element stopped working. Took in for repair and told it is irreparable. This is hard to accept, asked for clarification. No reply to my emails after 4 emails to service agents Elzaan Carolissen <***> and Keagen Permall <***>. In the end I picked up the toaster, will try to get it repaired by a handy man. I find this completely unacceptable, the toaster costs R5 000 and one would expect that a simple repair could be carried out. Be warned if you are considering purchasing SMEG products, their repair capability and customer communications is extremely poor.

SMEG Black double sink cracked whilst brand new and SMEG don't want to replace.

I am very dissapointed at SMEG products to say the least. I have just bought the SMEG black double sink for an amount of R6299.99 at Hirsch's Montana on the 15 June 2026 and it was delivered at the Hirsch's Montana Pretoria branch where I collected it on the 22nd June 2026. Upon arrival at home the sink has a crack in between that we did not see when we collected it and when I went back to Hirsch's to return it they are telling me that SMEG says they cannot replace as it waa my own negligence when I was tranaporting the goods. I am asking myself after spending so much money buying a sink that can crack at any given time whilst brand new how was it going to be functional when dishes are washed. Very unrealiable product, expensive for nothing 😡 Now I must again buy a new sink all my R6299.99 down the drain for what.

POOR SMEG SUPPORT

I contacted Smeg to get a technician to come out to fix the stove, oven and extractor fan when I moved into my new place. To get a service technician to come out I had to pay R1200 upfront. I took all the risk. The technician came out did an assessment and they sent a quote for the repairs. I paid upfront for this R5500 including another labor cost. After a week, I queried the delay with Smeg directly and was told the lead time for the extractor fan parts was 2-3 weeks, but the stove and oven parts were readily available. I followed up MAK to get the stove and oven fixed. The Technician then came out again 2 weeks later with the extractor fan part which didnt solve the problem. The communicator box was damaged which he didn't notice/ignored in the first assessment. MAK sent another quote for the communicator box and included a labor charge again which I disputed. They discounted it by R150 which I still disputed because if the technician had done the root cause analysis correctly the first time there would be no need for two repeat visits for the same problem. They are insisting there was another technician that came out and damaged the box. This is false. Their technician was the only one I called out and met after I moved into my new place. I had no previous discussions nor meetings with any other technician. I feel MAK are abdicating responsibility for poor root cause analysis and I must pay for their poor assessment.

SMEG APPLIANCES

i am writing to formally express my dissatisfaction with my Smeg kettle and Smeg itself. I purchased all the products including the kettle . kettle has started peeling and Smeg answered me it not their department. I spent a fortune at Hirch's Struben Valley that day on Smeg products only for the kettle to peel and chip , disappointing considering the premium price. my complaint to Smeg itself, i received a dismissive response., with no effort to assist me further. i will notify every social media platform that i can, with photos of the product.it is unacceptable with brand image SMEG PROMOTES. TRY PHONE THEM TO GET THE RIGHT EMAIL OF THE PERSON THEIR ADVERT GIVES YOU ONLY SPARES EMAIL, THEY ARE PATHETIC!!!!!ONLY HEAR NOW THAT IT HAS A TWO YEAR WARRANTY . I MUST RIDE TO SMEG FOR THEM TO ASSESS IT FIRST THEN DECIDE IF I GET A 50% TRADE IN OR WHATEVER!!! TWO YEAR GUARANTEE ON A SMEG PRODUCT, AMC CLASSIC WHICH I HAVE LIFE TIME. PEOPLE BE WARE OF THIS OVERPRICED PRODUCT!!!!

Smeg Parts are hopeless.

After 5 emails and a month of trying to get a response from Smeg Parts, I still have not received any sensible response as to if a part is available and what it costs.

Blown Away!

Goodness, can't remember when last I was this impressed with a supplier. I purchased a SMEG Gas Hob a year ago from Hirsch's and one of the ignitors stopped working. I logged this with Hirsch's yesterday morning and this morning service tech's from SMEG was at my premises to fix it. This is what I call great after-sales service. Well done. Please keep it up.
