Cancelled 2-3years ago. Told I’m owing today

I had issues with this network some 2-3years ago then called to cancel.they said they’d send a confirmation email. Nothing was sent and Debit orders stopped.. now 2-3years I’m told my account has been handed over with an outstanding amount that’s ridiculous. Can a cancellation just be that. Why wait for 3years if anything was a miss?
