My experience using MTN wifi on a cross-country road trip.

My temporary use of Openweb's wifi for my road trip just might turn into a permanent backup for my husband and I's roadtrips. In essence, we drove from Johannesburg to Cape Town in the past two or so days, and we have tested our 1TB special plan along the way because we never really had anything other than fibre, and it has worked really well!

Throughout the trip, I actually ended up using the sim in my phone more than anything. It is not really advertised I think, but you can use certain plans in your smartphone, so that was a pleasant surprise. We brought along our router but did not have anything to plug it in to along the way, so this way, I was able to stream music and whatnot while my husband drove.

Now the speeds: I got about 14Mbps on average and usually not where I expected it. On the national roads like the N9 and N1, I got between 5.1Mbps and 27.4Mbps, so that was shocking. I just got a new phone, so that might have helped since it supports 5g, but I am not sure. The speeds were slower when it was my turn to drive and my husband used it on his iPad.

Once we would actually get to hotels though, the speed would usually be about 25Mbps-35Mbps using our zte router. I did not actually record what they were, but that is what I remember seeing at least.

The only time that the wifi dropped was in the Karoo, I believe. This surprised me quite a lot! I was impressed. We are still in cape town but will update the review if necessary. So far so good! the only complaint that I have is that the text messages from MTN are super annoying. I asked about them, but it turns out that there is no way to turn them off. My husband says that it is normal and so did Openweb's staff, so I guess I will just delete and report spam if possible. I suppose that I got those with my prepaid telkom SIM as well, so I should not be surprised. Openweb, however, has been amazing. Their products are just as good as what you would get with MTN or Telkom, but they are so much more efficient!
