Slow MTN/AfriHost LTE speeds explained
I am a client of AfriHost since the middle of last year. Due to personal requirements I joined with a Pure LTE package – 20mbps UNCAPPED. As advertised “UNCAPPED Anytime” which suited my needs as I need a constant minimum of at least 10 mbps up and download speed. Everything was running well for the first few months and as of January the service became poor at times with up and download speeds of less than10 mbps. Every time I complained someone, somewhere did something and it went okay again for a few days. For the past two weeks this happened daily and complaining bared little fruit. It was blamed on bad weather, common to LTE etc. Sometimes as low as 1.0 down and 0.7 up. Nothing changed on my side and I told them that I have been using LTE for 5 years and never had such low speed issues. They told me that they would contact their service provider MTN. This persisted over the past weekend and last week I raised a complaint again and it again became slightly better after AfriHost told me to lock the router on 4G only. Every now and then I had to restart the router, set it on Auto again to have connectivity. It always functioned rather well on AUTO but I allowed them the benefit of the doubt by abiding. I decided to upgrade to a 50mbps package, also UNCAPPED as advertised around last Wednesday. Thinking that this would solve the speed issue. Over last weekend the speed was great and I thought that it was resolved. On Monday 24 February it again went right down and I raised another complaint. Nothing whatsoever changed so yesterday I again asked AfriHost what the problem was. Last night I requested a CALL BACK and one of their operatives phoned me. I again explained my situation, the apologised and promised to deal with it. During the conversation I asked if the reason wasn’t perhaps due to “throttling” as I am well aware of the old “fair usage policy”. I was assured that my service was uncapped. Just ten minutes later I got this mail. Good Evening Alwyn
I trust you are well
We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused
Please note, speeds are also affected based on how much data has been used up, for 50Mbps Uncapped Pure LTE (MTN) - Subject to a monthly threshold of 150GB. Once you’ve reached your monthly data limit, your connection speed will be limited to 4Mbps for the remainder of the month, 153.925 GB data has been used up so far. Please see further information on the usage policy on this link, https://www.afrihost.com/lte
Should you require any assistance do not hesitate to let me know.
Do enjoy the rest of your day.
Kind Regards
So, after weeks of complaining and asking about throttling this now is their explanation? Now if this is indeed so I have a few observations: 1, When I opted for this service it was nowhere mentioned that the CAPPED a threshold on data usage. This to me looks like **** or dishonest advertising.
2, When I checked my usage last week, as I always do for personal reasons, the reading was around 75Gig. So it is rather strange, taking the poor speeds over the past week, that I now have reached this limit I have been unaware of. 3.Throttling a 50 mbps “UNCAPPED” service to 4mbps seems rather harsh as it accounts for 92% of the service gone. 4.Nothing has changed my side and the service ran fine from its inception. Never reached the unknown threshold during this time. I thought I had the package suiting my needs, but I obviously do not. What can you recommend for an LTE package giving a solid 20/20 mbps speed 24/7 ?
