Afrihost MTN Pure LTE Sucks
I recently got MTN Pure LTE through Afrihost. I already had fibre at home, where I usually work, but I needed internet at an office space I sometimes work from 2 or 3 times a week. I went for a 40GB data package from Pure (it is an MTN thing trhough Afrihost) that was decently priced, and I liked the idea of having LTE, thinking that I can take it with me when I am away, traveling or on holiday - especially now with Covid that more and more stuff are being done remotely.
First, I was forced to buy a R1800 wifi router, because MTN doesn't allow you to use anything else "because they want to ensure fast speeds" - if you use any other routers, they block your SIM. I made peace with it and dished out the R1800 for a router.
I am currently on a trip to Durban, where I knew there wouldn't be free wifi available. I therefore packed my MTN Pure LTE sim card and my expensive R1800 router. The first night everything worked fine, but today I got an email stating that my sim card was bocked because I was using it in another location than where I initially signed up. Apperently, this was done "to ensure fast and reliable speeds". For the little while that my internet did work, there was absolutely nothing wrong with my speeds. What on earth is the use of LTE internet (that their own website boasts can easily be moved from location to location) if you are not allowed to use it anywhere else? I can understand if it was a cheap, uncapped package, and they wanted to limit misuse, but my package is capped! If I use it more, I will need to buy more data and they benefit!!!! I would gladly move to another provider, that can provide a more mobile solution, but I am sitting with a R1800 router bought from elsewhere that was now already used for a month and cannot be returned. This whole experience has been absolutely sh*t. I am deeply regretting signing up with them. Everytime I use the LTE sim in the way I wanted to, it gets blocked for some or other reason. Even though I can easily cancel it, because it is month to month, I have already wasted R1800 on a router that I then wouldn't need.
The fact that the location needs to be fixed, is not stated openly on the terms and conditions. It is found, hidden in the FAQ's. On all the official marketing they just boast about how easy LTE is to install and that it can easily be moved around. Other people I know, who has similar fixed LTE plans at other providers, can move their router around, without any problem. However, MTN and Afihost clearly do not want to PROVIDE any internet.
