Afrihost LTE is just bad
I changed to Afrihost LTE 9 months ago, after checking they do in fact cover my area.
The data transfer rates were good (not great and nowhere near actual LTE) for the first month or so but after that the data rates just started dropping off to the eventual point of the connection only connecting on EDGE but with full signal. I logged several complaints with afrihost, each time there was no technically sound answer, the best being that my sim card ID is somehow no longer set to receive LTE.
The funny thing is that when I use my phones MTN sim in my LTE modem I get better data rates than with the MTN-Afrihost sims, when I brought this up with their support they gave a figurative shrug and could not give me any reason for it, I surmise that afrihost's data is shaped to give preference to cellular data clients who pay more for data per Gb and hence lucrative to them / MTN.
I am guessing afrihost will reply to this message apologizing for the lack of service blah blah but nothing will change with my data rates. I wish to dissuade anyone who comes across this complaint to not waste their time with afrihost.
We can assure you that absolutely no shaping/ bandwidth priority is being done on our Mobile data as a whole. It is very strange that your MTN SIM works OK though, both SIMs make the same connection - the only difference our APN makes is the billing and data usage is collected by us.
We've requested the SIM be re-provisionsed both on the MTN network as well as for LTE access. This can take up to 48 hours to reflect. Should you still not have any joy please send us your SIM details as the SIM itself may not be capable of LTE.
