Just signed up for an fibre Internet connection through Afrihost with Vumatel as the last mile provider. Trying to set-up the connection. One hour in, Afrihost call centre experience is reminiscent of Telkom. You are number 2 in the queue.... You are number 20 in the queue. What? Ok patience, I can do this...I survived Telkom You are number 19 in the queue, estimate waiting time...30 minutes?? Eventually get through... ACC: Your order is on hold for payment. ME: But the offer is free? ACC: Oh!
ME: Ok Vumatel have done their job. Can I connect to the Internet now? ACC: Do you have a "Object Number". ME: No. ACC: Oh, you will need to wait up to five days for Afrihost to get the ON from Vumatel. ME: 5 DAYS!?! You can deliver a physical object round the world in 48 hours or less. How can it take so long to send a few bytes via fibre across Johannesburg. ME: Oh, can I chase up with fibre technical? ACC: Ok I will transfer you. SILENCE.............CALL DROPS
HELLO HELLKOM WELCOME BACK.
I can do this, I survived Telkom. Call back, select Technical option from nice computerised lady's voice. (Sure it was the same lady that worked at Telkom). Nice Lady: You are caller number 25, estimated waiting time 30 minutes.
