Zone Fitness dropped the ball.
This company has caused nothing but headaches from local management at the Campus Square club to head office regarding payments. Problems with the Campus Square facility: 1. Disgusting bathrooms that never seem to be cleaned. 2. The actual gym floor always has litter all over the place as well like sweet wrappers, fruit peels etc. 3. The aircon never works. 4. The parking ticket validation machine almost never works which results in members to queue at the mall ticket office to leave and then results in us being late (if you gym in the morning). 5. The number of free weights are minimal and you are always left waiting for weights or a machine, even early in the mornings when the gym is not even that full.
The issue with Zone Fitness Accounts at Head Office: 1. We were charged a full membership fee in April 2020 even though all gyms were closed. The excuse was outstanding balances but on my specific account I had no outstanding balance as my membership is paid via debit order and goes directly off my account. 2. On 30 June 2020 members received an SMS stating that 50% of our membership fees will be deducted and the reason for that was that they "believe that the opening of gyms are imminent". In my opinion, this is unfortunately not a decision that Zone Fitness gets to make, unfortunately so how can they deduct money for a service that their members are legally not allowed to use? Also, debit orders have to be submitted more between 4 and 5 working days in advance to banks for them to be deducted. This tells me that Zone Fitness submitted these debit orders already around the 25th or 26th and only informed us the day before the deductions were supposed to take place thereby not giving it's members time to acknowledge and/or dispute the matter. What will we get for 50% of our membership fees? What if Woolworths had a sale on bread and said all bread is now 50% off but we can't actually have the bread, we must just pay for it?
Because of the ********** gym at Campus Square I have also joined Viva Gym on a month to month basis for R100 more and they have not deducted any money since March. Zone Fitness can take note on how to manage a gym and how to do ethical business. I will be canceling my membership at Zone Fitness as soon as I can and to anyone who is interested in joining I advise to rather look at other alternatives. In this case, the low price is definitely proportionate to the level of service as well as the actual facility whereas with other gyms such as Viva Gym and Planet Fitness you actually get value for money.
To the CEO and Management team: please consider reassessing the way you do business. This has been a difficult time for millions of people in South Africa and I do understand that you have a business to run but this is not the way to do it. When you started a national gym this was one of the risks, like with any business, you can't expect your clients to pay for something they cannot use.
