Unfair payments

I have an issue that I was hoping some could help me with. I signed up for a zone fitness account 2 years ago. I made use of the facilities the first month of having the account and after that was unable to due to work been intense. I paid for the for 2 or 3 months after that and then I changed my banking account and completely forgot about the zone fitness account. This year I started receiving calls from debt collectors saying I owe them R8500. Now I know I signed a contract that I was told it none obligatory and able to stop or put on hold at any time, but why am I to pay R8500 for a facility I only used for 1 month. And when I asked them if I pay the amount, will the facilities be made available for me for the amount that Im to pay, I was told no. So how can I give money for nothing.
