Refusal to cancel gym membership after the contract duration

I signed a 24 months contract with the gym, I had to leave the area I was staying in after 11 months of joining. I was never assisted with cancelation. I paid for the duration of 24 months without going to the gym but the gym still deducts money from my account and when I called them they are telling me that they do month to month contract that I know nothing of. They are still Refusing to cancel and start telling me about lawyers and all.
