Deductions after contract cancellation now lawyer demand payment

My contact expired a year ago.i never signed a new contract but they deducted money monthly. In Jan I cancelled my payment. The manager promised someone from accounts will cont me . No one did but payments were coming of my account. So I put a stop order ...six months later I get a call from the law firm saying I owe them money....
