Cancellation not processed upon request

I signed up for a membership of 2 with Zone Fitness. Upon applying for the service I was given a grace period of 7 days to cancel. I cancelled my membership the Friday after applying and I was advised within the store that I should return the cards in order to receive my deposit. I did not return the cards as I did worry with the deposit. All I wanted was for the membership to be cancelled.

The end of FEB 2017 i received a notification from my bank the R380 was debited by zone fitness. I then emailed Zone Fitness(Lucy Doolings) advising her that I cancelled my membership. I then receive an email back from her advising that she'll look into it. A month later and no feedback reveived at all until I emailed her again. I was then advised that she she does not deal with queries like these but she will forward my query. Another month past and I did not get any feedback again. I then emailed her again and was told that she forwarded my query. Another month past and yet again no feedback. Monday the 29/5/17 I emailed again as still no feedback was received. She then forwarded my email to Charlton Emtoch (Operations Manager). He then advised me of the following "

The major challenge we have is that there is no proof that you were here to cancel. We cannot track who you spoke to at that time or anything of such sorts. And such information/proof is pivotal for us to cancel your membership.

As it stands, you are liable for the arrears on this membership. However we have not s****ped this query and it is on file to re-visit."

And now the account has been handed over to collections. This has given me a bad credit record
