Refund refused

I saw a top online worth R1300 and the only store that had it in medium was centurion mall. I asked a friend of mine coming from pretoria to joburg to buy it for me on her way so i deposited money into her debit card. When she arrived with the top it didnt look like what i had anticipated so i wanted to return it to the cresta branch. the branch manager indicated that the funds could only be returned to the card that made the purchase as the slip indicates that the purchase was made from a credit card thus they could not refund cash. its buffling because the friend who bought the top on my behalf definately used a debit card and she has since gone to KZN for the holidays. i am now stuck with a top i cant exchage as the card is with her. How is it my problem that their machine reads a debit card as credit card in the first place
