Re: *****ulent Charge, post conclusion of the Rental Agreement
My previous review, still “holds” to an extent, the service provided upon pick-up and drop-off of the rented vehicle seemed effortless. However, the actions which preceded by Woodford is nothing short of *****ulent!
According to their rental agreement, they will bill the client a R250.00 handling fee for any traffic fine received during the use / rental of the vehicle. We unfortunately got a traffic ticket for parking in a “reserved” parking bay. The traffic violation ticket was settled accordingly with the Cape Town Traffic Authority.
When I queried as to why and how my account was billed for an amount of R287.50, I was advised by a customer service consultant [a Ms. T. David], that even though I had settled the fine, Woodford charges a re-direction fee, as the ticket needs to be linked to my name, and not the rental company’s.
Reasons for me believing Woodford acted in a *****ulent manner:
1. My bank account was debited without my approval / authorization;
2. Their agreement is specific about amounts and whether such amounts attract VAT.
3. The “handling fee / redirection fee” for traffic fines, a fee amount of R250.00;
4. The point of all amounts are including VAT unless stated otherwise;
5. My understanding of point 10.19, is that the R250.00 was inclusive of VAT, in accordance of details outlined in point 4.1;
6. Point 4.7, stipulates that outstanding charges would be payable by the “due date,” the invoice shared via email to me, had no stipulated payment date, and when I did query this invoice with the representative: Sumith Hooseria, I got ZERO Feedback, emails sent to Hooseria on 21/05/2024 & 27/05/2024. It was only after I emailed their customer service on 03/06/2024, did I get replies from a Ms. T. David;
7. My FNB Bank account was debited for an amount of R287.50, and such was completed without my authorization on 26/05/2024;
8. According to Ms. David, the “redirection fee” is for the fact that the traffic fine is changed from their own name(s) to mine, which contradicts the information stipulated on the fine payment confirmation received from the Cape Town Traffic Authority;
9. Ms. David also stipulated, even though I had settled the fine [which is still in my possession], the ‘redirection fee” was still payable;
This “handling fee / redirection fee” to me seems as a way to ‘fleece’ unsuspecting clientele, and I do not believe such practice is ethical nor legal. Yes, Woodford needs to have a system in place to deal with clients who choose not to settle a fine, but in my opinion the additional fees need to be based specifically on an “individual rental basis.”
To-date, the amount debited from my bank account has NOT been refunded, next ‘stop’ the Ombudsman for Vehicle Rental Companies in South Africa.
