Banned for notifying contacts of my new number

So my phone was ****** the other day and I had to get a new number. Just like I did before when my number changed, I notified all of my contacts via a broadcast message on Whatsapp, but unlike before, I discovered that your contacts cannot actually see a broadcast unless they already have your number. So thus began the really exacerbating exercise of messaging everyone one-by-one to tell them. I was just banned now for violating the terms of service under Whatsapp, so my immediate reaction is since I'm doing this off of my WiFi and since I actually pay to use Whatsapp (don't we?) then what is the actual issue? I understand there are spam worries out there, but in that case, make it easier for people to send out broadcasts.
