Wesbank's heartlessness has cost them a 30-year customer relationship

My wife and I have been through a tough six months - she lost her job and I went from salaried employee to self-employed - and during this time we have struggled to pay all our bills. One of these is for the car my wife financed through Wesbank. She had informed them of her unemployed status, and was told to keep them updated if her status changed. She is now in her first month at a new sales job and has been looking forward to beginning to sort out some of the debts that have accumulated, including the outstanding car payments.

Except Wesbank has now told her that if she doesn't pay the full outstanding balance on the car - over R8000 - by Monday, it will be repossessed immediately. Since she requires the car for her job, this will mean losing the new job she has just obtained. Despite multiple pleas to simply be given until payday, at the end of this month (or 11 more days), Wesbank refuses to budge ansd will not give us an extension until then.

So they are now going to take our car, and my wife's new job with it, on Monday. I cannot believe that a company can be so heartless and cruel in these tough economic times, and I cannot believe they claim to care about their customers when they actually adopt this kind of attitude.

Since I am unable to do anything to prevent this, I am going to have to take the only action I can in defiance of them - as they are a division of FNB, I am going to close down my FNB accounts, thereby ending a relationship that dates back more than 30 years, to when I was a teenager and used a Bob-T account. I will take my business to Capitec instead (I already have an account there and have only ever received wonderful service from them) and will never have a good word to say again about Wesbank, and by extension, FNB ('How can we help you?' my backside!), nor will I ever want anything to do with such a bunch of heartless ***s again, as they are going to cost my wife her job, and possibly cost us our house too, because of their unwillingness to simply wait until the first paycheck comes in and we can sort out our outstanding debt.

Way to go guys, you clearly have a hell of a lot to learn about how to treat (and thus keep) your long term customers!

Good day Thank you for your concerns highlighted affording us the opportunity to intervene. A WesBank representative has contacted you and the account holder, to discuss the matter and establish a way forward. Although the account holder is in breach of her agreement with us, we have agreed to accept 1 final arrangement to eradicate the arrear position on the account. Once payment is made, we will withdraw the matter to avoid repossession. We trust that the matter was handled to your satisfaction. Kind regards WesBank
