Same Bank, Multiple Interest Rates – And Apparently Cash Is No Longer King

I am currently in the process of purchasing a vehicle through Omoda Alberton and financing through Wesbank , and the experience has left me questioning how the system actually works for consumers.

The dealership initially submitted my application through their F&I department and received a rate from WesBank. As an FNB Private Client who does ALL my banking with the group (including my home loan), I decided to also approach WesBank directly to see whether I could obtain a better rate. I am such a loyal FNB person I even convinced our company to switch to FNB

Interestingly, I did receive a better interest rate directly from WesBank than the one initially presented through the dealership.

However, the dealership then indicated that if I proceed with my own financing directly with the bank, I will lose the negotiated vehicle discounts on this demo model because the finance would not be processed through their F&I department.

In other words, the consumer is placed in a position where arranging your own finance may cost you the discount on the vehicle, presumably because commissions on the finance deal are affected.

What became even more confusing is the following sequence:

• The dealership initially obtained one interest rate from WesBank • I obtained a better rate directly from WesBank • The dealership then went back and obtained another different rate from WesBank • After that, the new offer I received directly from WesBank was suddenly higher again. At this stage we have multiple different interest rates from the same bank, for the same applicant, for the same vehicle, within the same transaction and same dealership.

To be fair, I must specifically acknowledge Rebone from WesBank, who has been extremely helpful and has genuinely tried to assist me through the process. Unfortunately it seems that internal systems and dealership structures limit what can actually be done once applications are loaded into the system.

Another interesting observation for consumers: It appears cash is no longer king in the motor industry. Paying cash actually results in paying more for the vehicle, while financing through certain channels appears to unlock discounts. That feels somewhat counter-intuitive for many buyers.

From a consumer perspective this situation also raises a broader question around transparency. If the same bank can issue different interest rates for the same deal depending on how the application is submitted, it becomes difficult for customers to know whether they are truly receiving the best available rate or whether intermediary structures influence the outcome. Plus it's more of you fix it and that differs too.

WesBank has built its reputation over decades as one of South Africa’s leading asset-based finance providers and promotes customer-focused values. I am hopeful that this matter can be resolved fairly so that:

1. The best available interest rate offered by WesBank is honoured. 2. The vehicle discounts already negotiated remain in place. 3. The transaction can proceed transparently without the consumer being penalised for engaging directly with the bank.

As a consumer this experience highlights the importance of transparency in vehicle finance. If different rates can be produced by the same bank for the same applicant and vehicle depending on whether the application is submitted through a dealership F&I office or directly with the bank, it becomes very difficult for customers to know whether they are truly receiving the most competitive rate available.

I trust that Wesbank, FNB and Omoda Alberton can assist in resolving this matter constructively so that the deal can proceed fairly for all parties involved.

Thank you for your response and for logging reference number CRSEA219.
However, I would like to clarify that this matter had already been raised through the normal complaint channels previously without resolution, which is precisely why I escalated the matter to HelloPeter.
While I appreciate the acknowledgement, routing the matter back into the same complaints process unfortunately does not resolve the underlying issue.
The concern here is that multiple different interest rates have now been issued by WesBank for the same applicant, the same vehicle and the same transaction within a very short period of time, depending on whether the application was submitted through the dealership F&I office or directly with the bank.
To summarise:
• The dealership initially obtained one interest rate from WesBank.
• I approached WesBank directly and received a better rate.
• The dealership then resubmitted and obtained another different rate.
• The revised offer I subsequently received directly from WesBank was then suddenly higher again.
At this point there are multiple interest rates from the same bank for the same transaction, which understandably raises concerns regarding transparency and consistency.
Importantly, a lower interest rate was already offered to me directly by WesBank earlier in this process. As that rate was issued by the bank based on my credit profile and the same vehicle transaction, I would respectfully request that this rate be honoured as the valid offer for this deal.
I would therefore ask that this matter be escalated to a senior decision-maker within WesBank who has the authority to review the full transaction and confirm the interest rate that will be honoured so that the deal can proceed.
I would also appreciate confirmation on the following:
• Which interest rate represents WesBank’s final approved rate for this transaction.
• Whether the dealership finance submission has influenced or overridden the rate originally offered directly by WesBank.
• Whether it is standard practice for multiple different interest rates to be generated for the same credit agreement.
I would again like to acknowledge Rebone from WesBank who has genuinely tried to assist me throughout this process. My concern is not with individual staff members but rather with the lack of clarity around how the interest rates have been determined.
As a consumer I believe transparency and consistency are important in credit agreements. Should the matter remain unresolved, I will request a formal explanation of the rate determination process in terms of the National Credit Act and escalate the matter to the appropriate regulatory bodies if necessary.
I trust that WesBank will review the matter holistically and confirm the rate that was already offered so that the transaction can proceed fairly for all parties.
I look forward to being contacted by someone with the appropriate authority regarding reference CRSEA219.

WesBank / FNB
I appreciate the phone call from WesBank on Friday, where I was assured that the consultant would contact the new dealer and work on resolving the finance structure and rate issue. Unfortunately, since then there has been no feedback and no tangible progress, which is exactly the pattern that led to my HelloPeter complaint in the first place.
During the call I explained clearly that the payment difference between R10k deposit with a 20% balloon and even a R100k deposit is almost negligible, which is why I asked whether WesBank could structure the deal differently — preferably no deposit and a fixed interest rate. The consultant even joked that “as girls we would rather keep the money in our pocket for shopping than put it into a deposit” and assured me she would work on the numbers and revert.
That was the commitment made.
However, what I am experiencing instead is continuous calls with promises but no actual solution or follow-through, which unfortunately feels like gaslighting rather than customer service.
What makes this situation even more disappointing is the long-standing relationship my family and I have with FNB and WesBank:
  • I have two home loans with FNB
  • All my business and personal banking is with FNB
  • My previous vehicles were financed through WesBank
  • I have even gone as far as moving my mother’s entire company banking to FNB
This is what loyalty looks like from a client’s side.
FNB’s own brand promise is built on “How can we help you?” and positioning itself as a bank that partners with customers to support their financial goals. (Tshepo's Blog)
Right now, however, I am struggling to see that philosophy reflected in the actual client experience.
All I have been asking for throughout this process is fair engagement and assistance in correcting the rate and structuring the finance in a way that makes sense, especially considering my long history with the bank and the fact that this is not my first vehicle financed through WesBank.
Instead of more phone calls and assurances, I would appreciate clear action and written confirmation of:
  1. Whether WesBank has engaged with the new dealer as promised
  2. What finance options were actually explored
  3. Whether a fixed rate option has been properly considered
At the moment, the experience feels very far removed from the customer-centric values that FNB and WesBank publicly promote.
I would really prefer to resolve this constructively, but I also expect the same level of loyalty and commitment from the bank that I have shown over the years as a client.

At this stage I am not looking for more phone calls or promises — I am asking for a senior WesBank representative to review this matter properly and provide a concrete solution. If the brand promise of FNB and WesBank is truly “How can we help you?”, then now would be the time to demonstrate that to a long-standing client.
If this matter cannot be resolved promptly and transparently, I will have to reconsider whether FNB and WesBank are institutions that truly value long-term clients, because at the moment the experience suggests otherwise.

These references below means absolutely nothing as we are sent from pillar to post and i get no further
