WeBuyCars Refusing to Honour Consumer Protection Act
I purchased a vehicle from WeBuyCars and paid the full amount in cash. Only six days after taking delivery, the vehicle experienced a major mechanical malfunction. According to the Consumer Protection Act (CPA) in South Africa, if a product fails within six months of purchase, the consumer has the right to choose between a repair, replacement, or refund. I exercised my right and requested that the vehicle be repaired. However, WeBuyCars has refused to repair the vehicle and insists that the only option available is a refund. The problem is that I have already spent more than R30,000 on vehicle-specific extras and repairs, including major suspension repairs that I paid for out of my own pocket after discovering the issues. These are expenses directly related to this vehicle and cannot simply be transferred to another vehicle. WeBuyCars has made it clear that they will not reimburse me for any of these costs, which leaves me with a substantial financial loss even though the vehicle failed only six days after purchase. Another major concern is the lack of communication from their side. After reading many other reviews online, it seems that many customers experience the exact same pattern. In my own experience over the past few days, they repeatedly say things like “we will resolve this shortly,” “we will get back to you shortly,” or “we will provide feedback shortly.” Unfortunately, this never happens. They do not phone you back, they do not follow up, and they do not keep you informed. Instead, they simply send short emails stating their decision, with no proper engagement or effort to resolve the matter. If you do not continuously phone them yourself, there is virtually no communication from their side. Because of the way this matter has been handled, I have now involved my lawyer, and all further communication with WeBuyCars will take place through him. I expected far better service and accountability from a company of this size. Very disappointing experience.
