Water pump

I took my car to VW Bryanston to check if all is working accordingly since well my warranty expires on the 17th of August. A week after my car coolant doesn't last then I went to VW to check they say it water pump and I should pay 50%. Why should I do that if specifically asked them to check everything before the warranty expires. I am really disappointed
