VW is ripping customer off

I recently changed my battery and now my stereo has locked and requires a code when I contact VW northcliff they told me that I have to pay for it yet on the radio manual there is a section where vw should write serial number and the radio code but it's blank and am expected to pay for something that should have come with the manual
