VW gear lever problem

My son rented a VW Polo Vivo 1.4 with 16000Km on the clock and he gear lever kept coming loose. This is apparently a very common fault with VW cars and yet Volkswagen South Africa in all these years has done absolutely nothing to solve the problem. Very disappointing from a company that claims the so called 'Under the skin engineering'.
