Worst Insurance Ever

I took out a new contract with Vodacom in November 2014. I initially did not opt for the Vodacom handset insurance as Samsung does provide some decent screen and water damage repairs free of charge. As bad luck would have it my 2-year-old son got hold of my phone and managed to break it beyond repairs. I then got another Galaxy Note 4 from FNB making use of their smart device offering. In January 2015 I received a call from Vodacom Insurance and they convinced me to take out an insurance policy on the handset. I immediately made them aware that I no longer have the original handset but that I replaced it with the exact same model via FNB. I was assured by the representative that this would not be a problem if I had to submit a claim.

Fast forward to April 2016 and I had a minor issue with my phone not wanting to charge properly. You kind of have to wiggle it a bit to make proper contact. I took the phone into a Samsung Repair Centre and was advised that the repairs would cost approximately R 1300. As this is a fairly large amount and I have the phone insured I went in to Vodaworld's repair centre in Midrand. They informed me that the insurance policy was for another EMEI number (that I was already aware of) and advised me to call Vodacom Insurance directly. I did this and got the same response from them. I explained that their representative had told me it would not be an issue. As the sales call centre is in Durban I was informed that they would need to get a copy of the telephone conversation and they will call me back after 3 working days. A week passed and I had not received a phone call so I called them. I got told that they have not received the call recording yet. Confident as I am of my case I asked the representative at the Insurance call centre what my excess amount would be for the claim. He told me it would be around R700 for the repairs. I nearly fell of my seat. He also informed me that in the event of a device replacement (theft or otherwise) the excess would be 20% of the handset value. Even thou I had never submitted a claim. Now on a +- R 13 000 handset that amounts to R 2 600.

No here is the part that really revs my engine. Vodacom has been charging me R 130.70 p/m month for insurance that I cannot use. I have never received any terms and conditions from them via either post or email regarding the insurance schedule. The excess was never communicated when they sold me the policy. This has to infringe on rights as a consumer and I am furious.

I have in effect paid them R 1960.50 for absolutely nothing. I feel ********** to say the least. I have subsequently cancelled my insurance with Vodacom and I implore you to do the same.
