Why do we preorder if it's not delivered on launch day?

Help me out here, what is the point of pre-ordering a Samsung Galaxy S8 for the launch day if i don't receive on the day of launch.

I started the whole process back in April. So i went onto the Vodacom website on the 6th of April to register and got my confirmation email that someone will contact me between the 18th April and 4 May. As this did not happen by the 22nd of April, I registered again, just in case. I really want this phone you see.

Time passed by still and no phone call. So in anticipation of no phone call been made to me, I contacted the upgrades department on the 3rd of May in the morning. The lady on the line sounded like she just wanted the phone call over with from the first sentence. However she assisted me through the whole process of doing the upgrade and confirming all my details, such as the delivery address, the contract details etc. The process took almost 15 minutes, understandably as there are quite a few processes involved. At this point it was confirmed to me that the order has been place and delivery should take place on Friday.

I was super excited to be receiving my device, i made sure i made all my relevant documents ready. As the device was being delivered to my work, I even asked our ladies at reception to make sure they get a hold me as soon as they see someone delivering a phone.

I received a phone call on Friday morning, asking if i want to still preorder the Samsung Galaxy S8, in which i informed the consultant, that i had already ordered one and was expecting delivery of the device the same day.

In such confusion I contacted the Vodacom call center at 11:45, with the order number i received on an sms after the process on Wednesday, to confirm what time that device will be delivered. After the whole process of confirming all my details and the order number, the consultant on line said he could not assist me and i should get in touch with the after sales department, which he redirected my call to. Again another consultant had confirm all my details.

At this point the After Sales consultant, informed my that my device was not scheduled for delivery as of yet. It was still been confirmed by your confirmation department. This is where i got highly confused, what was the point of the 15 minute call, confirming all my details for the upgrade?
When i asked what they needed to confirm, the consultant just went quite for while said they need to confirm the order. Again, been confused, i asked what details i need to confirm.
Still no reason was provided to me.

I then asked to be put through to this department to speed along the process, in hope they could still assist me. However, i was informed, the confirmation department does not take calls. The consultant then ask me for contact detail for them to call me on, which i told him he can use the number i am currently using. Which i still needed to needed to confirm to him again. As Vodacom, you would think you have my number?

After this phone call was complete, i got an sms to ask if my issue had been resolve, if not i should reply NO, which i did.
I was given a call in the 15 minutes. Again i had to explain my whole story. This consultant, informed me i would need to speak to the Upgrades department to try and get the matter resolved, so i ask to be transferred again. After waiting for almost 10 minutes on hold, a consultant answered the call and introduced himself, then the call ended.

So i continued worked and just waited with baited breath for a phone call to be received from this confirmation department. It was getting late so called again to the upgrade department at around 4:30, so obviously i was not receiving a phone that day. The consultant in the upgrade, gave me the same story about the confirmation department, however he now informed me that they tried to contact me and it went straight to voice mail. This is a lie, as i have no record of a missed call or voice mail. My device was on and I had been receiving phone calls on it all day.

I then asked what the turn around time is for the confirmation department, which he informed me is 24 hours. Clearly they are out of SLA.

He then informed me that i can try the after sales department again, as they sit on the same floor as this confirmation department. Again my call was transferred the consultant on the line, could not assist me, in which i asked for a manager or supervisor.

After being put on hold for quite some time again, the holding music stopped, and there was just silence, in panic my call had been quite off again, i just kept saying Hello, which was meet with an echo. Finally after what felt like eternity, i got a reply from the other end of the line.

The manager, the heard my story again, in which i asked to put in contact with the Confirmation department, which he informed they knock off at 5 so they wont be able to assist me, this now being 16:45. I asked what other alternatives i have to try and get the device this weekend. I wanted to go into a store and get one. However, due to my order pending with the confirmation department, a store can not assist me, until they cancel my order with that department. The confirmation department only works Mon - Fri. They cant assist me until Monday.

At this point i was defeated, and the manager could detect this too. He said, that due the backlog that the confirmation department might be working on Saturday morning, see if i could make a plan. He ensured he would call me back within 10 minutes with confirmation. I am still waiting for that call.

So again, i ask what is the point of a pre order?
